5 Tips To Optimize Blogger Template

How To Optimize A Blogger Template For Search Engine Optimization?

Of the many platforms out there for websites, Blogger is my favorite for search engine optimization. Three simple reasons: it's easy to use, there is a lot of support for it, and it's owned by Google (you know, that company that runs the search engine you want to optimize for?). There are probably a thousand ways to optimize your Blogger template but here are a few that I think are easy to implement and can make a big difference. These tips are a mix of ones of my own as well as those I picked up around the Net.

Change The Title Tags For Your Posts
On my main blog, I always noticed that my blog's title would come first, pushing the post title into the ellipsis (the ...) . Clearly, this is NOT GOOD from an optimization standpoint. Fortunately, Blogger introduced a tag to let you switch the title order around. Blogger Buster has the details in Change the Title Tags for your Blogs

Remove the Navbar From Blogger
Derya Netter has a script to do just this at How to hide the blogger navbar? (via Beginner Blogger Basics). As you can see, I'm running the script and it works like a charm. Click on the link on the top left to toggle the bar.

Make your readers aware of the "Comment" link
If you are going to have comments, it's nice to let your novice readers know to leave one! First, make sure that for each deep page, the Post a Comment box is visible. Specifically, under the Settings tab, select Comments, and then select "Embedded Below Post" for "Comment Form Placement."

Once you are sure the post a comment box is visible on each individual post's page, look at your index page. You'll notice that instead of this box, there is simply a link with "# Comments." For long-time blogger readers, this is clear enough, but for novice readers, they may not be sure about how to leave a comment. Make it clear for them! In the Layout tab, select "Edit HTML" and then check "Expand Widgets." Scroll until you see:

<span class='post-comment-link'>

Now, replace the following chunk of code with the one below until the closing span tag:

<span class='post-comment-link'>
<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType != "item"'>
<b:if cond='data:post.allowComments'>
<a class='comment-link' expr:href='data:post.addCommentUrl'
expr:onclick='data:post.addCommentOnclick'>Leave a comment!</a>
(<b:if cond='data:post.numComments == 1'>1
<data:top.commentLabel/><b:else/><data:post.numComments/>
<data:top.commentLabelPlural/></b:if>)
</b:if>
</b:if>
</span>

Now, instead of seeing "Comments (#)," they will see "Leave a comment! (# Comments)." Note: always back up your template to your local hard drive before attempting such a change.

Avoid useless code
There are a lot of addons for webpages, which can look nice at times and be useful. However, at some point, the add-ons become too much, slowing down your pageload times and bloating your code. Not only is this poor for the user, it also makes it harder for the search engine to figure out what your page is about

Use searchable terms ALWAYS
All your filenames, both for HTML and images, should use terms like "search-engine-optimization.html" instead of "page1.html." Likewise, your images should be named something like "search-engine-optimization.jpg" instead of "image1.jpg." For images especially, make sure to use ALT tags, so that search engines know what is contained within the image.

These tips are pretty straightforward I think! I look forward to learning more advanced concepts and passing them on to you in a clearly explained manner. The tips apply generally to other platforms as well, such as Typepad and Wordpress. Although it is harder to start a page on Wordpress relative to Blogger, once you are able to set things up, there are a plethora of plug-ins to help optimize your page.

Do you have any similar tips? Do you think optimization is worthwhile?

My SEO Story

I started this blog to describe my experiences learning about search engine optimization (SEO). The goal of each post is to simply describe the answers I found to one of my SEO related questions. While I hope this is helpful to some people, the real purpose is somewhat self-centered: I simply want to catalog the things I've learned so I don't forget them! Hopefully you can benefit from what I've learned.

Why did you start this blog?

To answer questions! Just kidding. Here's my SEO story. I was first introduced to the internet way back in the early days when the Web was just getting off the ground (say, 1994 or so). I remember making my first pages in HTML and having fun learning new options like 'horizontal rule' or 'blink' back in the old NCSA browser. A few years later, I started my first site on a geocities server and then my own. The Geocities page was basically simple HTML, while the latter incarnation involved me basically coding a very basic blogging tool for myself out of perl. I liked the site, but it was truly a blog in every sense of the word. It had my rambling thoughts and my main audience was friends who clicked in from the link in my AIM profile. I think Blogger existed at the time, but had not been integrated with Google yet.

A few more years passed, and I decided to start a blog. The blog was aimed at a more general audience in my field of interest. I put much more effort into it, and was pleased to see the site get indexed and then get traffic from other sites and Google. Eventually I added AdSense, and once I saw those pennies start to trickle in, I was hooked. How do I get more traffic? How do I make my site better? And yes, how do I turn those pennies into dollars? That is when I first learned about search engine optimization

Most people reading this will probably be familiar with SEO, but for those who are not, the idea behind SEO is to design your site in such a way that it is easier for search engines to find it, index it, and rank it highly, thus garnering you search traffic. Why should you read this blog?

The goal of this blog is to provide answers to the SEO questions I had and researched on the "Intertubes." If you have similar questions, hopefully you will find some helpful answers on here.

I'm not sure how I feel about monetizing this blog. I'll probably add a few little things but it depends on whether anyone reads this! Honestly though, I make more money at my day job, so this is more of a hobby / sport for me. I view it as a challenge both from a design standpoint as well as from an algorithmic one. However, I can promise this:
  • I will try my best to provide high quality answers to these questions
  • I will try my best to answer any specific questions you have, or help us both find the answer
  • I will post whenever I feel like it =P Jus' sayin'...

  • I will not promote useless or overpriced products
  • I will not rant about things beyond my control or irrelevant to the topic
  • I will not waste your time with incorrect or poor information
If you find some use from this blog, more power to you. If not, hopefully you can find them through the information I link to. At the very least, I will be able to find answers to the questions I already asked!
